Overview

Calm authority over turbulent waters. The King of Cups balances emotional depth with composed leadership, feeling everything deeply while remaining steady and fair. He proves that sensitivity and strength aren't opposites.

Symbolism

A king sits on a stone throne set upon choppy seas, holding a short scepter in his left hand and a large golden cup in his right. A ship sails in the distance on one side, and a leaping dolphin appears on the other, representing the creative and intuitive forces of the unconscious. Despite the turbulent water surrounding him, his throne is stable and his expression is calm. He doesn't fight the sea; he simply sits with authority within it.

Upright Meaning

In love, the King of Cups represents emotional maturity in a partner or within yourself. This is someone who can navigate difficult conversations without becoming reactive, who leads with empathy but doesn't shy away from hard truths. Relationships deepen and stabilize under his influence because both people feel emotionally safe. In career, this card favors leadership that prioritizes emotional intelligence: diplomacy, mediation, conflict resolution, and the ability to make decisions that honor both logic and feeling. Roles in counseling, law, medicine, and creative direction are highlighted. Spiritually, the King of Cups has integrated his emotional and spiritual life so thoroughly that wisdom flows naturally from his presence. He doesn't need to perform compassion; it's simply who he is.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the King of Cups can signal emotional suppression, manipulation, or a leader who appears caring but operates from self-interest. Moodiness, volatility, and using emotional knowledge to control others are all shadows of this card. There may be a problem with substances or emotional escapism. The calm surface hides troubled waters.

When You Draw This Card

Lead with your heart, but don't let emotions drive unchecked. The goal is composure, not suppression.

Grounded in A.E. Waite's Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain), with modern interpretation.
