Overview

Numbered zero, The Fool stands at the very beginning of the tarot's story and somehow also at its end. This card is pure potential, the moment right before you leap into something you can't fully understand yet. It carries no baggage, no preconceptions, and no fear of looking ridiculous.

Symbolism

A young man in elaborate clothing pauses at the edge of a cliff, gazing toward a vast blue sky rather than the drop below. His small white dog bounds at his heels, representing instinct and loyalty. He carries a white rose, symbol of purity and desire, while a wallet over his shoulder holds everything he's gathered so far, though he barely notices it. The sun shining behind him suggests divine protection and optimism illuminating his path.

Upright Meaning

In love, The Fool signals a thrilling new chapter: a first date that surprises you, the decision to be vulnerable again after heartbreak, or a relationship that defies your usual "type." In career, this card says take the leap. Start the business, apply for the stretch role, pitch the unconventional idea. You don't need to have everything figured out. Spiritually, The Fool invites beginner's mind. Drop what you think you know about your own growth and let curiosity lead. Meditation, travel, an unexpected teacher, a practice you'd normally dismiss: all fair game right now.

Reversed Meaning

When reversed, The Fool's beautiful recklessness tips into genuine carelessness. You might be ignoring red flags, refusing to plan, or confusing avoidance with spontaneity. There can be a fear of commitment hidden behind a carefree exterior. Sometimes this card reversed simply says you're holding back from a jump you know you need to take, paralyzed by overthinking what could go wrong.

When You Draw This Card

Trust the unknown. The Fool asks you to step forward even when you can't see the bottom of the cliff, because the fall itself is where the magic happens.

Grounded in A.E. Waite's Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain), with modern interpretation.
