Overview

Solitude as a deliberate practice, not loneliness but chosen retreat. The Hermit climbs to the mountaintop alone, lantern in hand, searching for truth that can only be found in silence. This card says the answers you're looking for won't come from anyone else right now.

Symbolism

An ancient robed figure stands on a high peak, holding a lantern containing a six-pointed star. The staff in his other hand represents authority and grounded wisdom. His elevated position shows he's above the noise of daily life, and his lantern illuminates just enough of the path ahead. He isn't lost; he's deliberately walking in the dark, trusting his own light to show the way.

Upright Meaning

In love, The Hermit often signals a need for space. This doesn't mean a relationship is failing; it means someone needs time alone to process, reflect, or reconnect with themselves. If you're single, this card suggests that the right relationship will come after you've done the inner work. Don't rush it. In career, The Hermit favors deep thinking over networking. Step away from the noise, mentor yourself, and focus on what truly matters rather than what's trending. Spiritually, this is one of the most powerful cards for inner development. Meditation, retreat, journaling, therapy, solo travel: anything that creates space for self-reflection is supported.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, healthy solitude becomes unhealthy isolation. You may be withdrawing from people out of fear rather than wisdom, or using introspection as an excuse to avoid real-world engagement. There's a risk of becoming so self-absorbed that you lose connection with the people and experiences that ground you. Ask whether your solitude is nourishing or just hiding.

When You Draw This Card

Step back from the noise. The clarity you need requires solitude, and that's not something to apologize for.

Grounded in A.E. Waite's Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain), with modern interpretation.
